Resources

An important part of STROBE’s education mission is sharing resources we have developed and tested, as well as resources from partners we have worked with.

STROBE Developed/Supported

PhET

STROBE supported the development of a new version of the popular PhET Wave Interference Simulation, including porting it to HTML5 to allow wider access (conversion from Java resulted in a 20% increase in usage in the first three months after it was published) and adding new features including diffraction.

Microscopes of Tomorrow App

STROBE partnered with the Lawrence Hall of Science to develop the “Microscopes of Tomorrow” app, which enables users to explore both STROBE’s cutting-edge science and inspiring faculty and students.

URSSA Survey

Anne-Barrie Hunter, STROBE’s external evaluator, is a key member of the Undergraduate Research Student Self-Assessment (URSSA) development team, and STROBE uses this tested and validated instrument in evaluating our summer research programs.

CU Prime

A founding member of the Access Network, CU PRIME is a student-led organization committed to improving culture in physics departments through mentoring, scientific inquiry introductory courses, and other community focused events. STROBE is delighted to collaborate with them and share and disseminate best practices.

Center for Improvement of Experiences in Research (CIMER)

Four STROBE staff are certified facilitators of the “Entering Mentoring” curriculum developed by the Center for Improvement of Experiences in Research (CIMER). We have provided this training to >50 STROBE trainees and are planning to expand it to all STROBE faculty, staff, and students.

Software Carpentries

STROBE has been a member of The Carpentries since 2019, training our participants in programming and version control, as well as data management and analysis.

IIL

Recommended by STROBE’s Industry Advisory Board, the International Institute for Learning (IIL) provides Project Management (PMP) training and other industry training courses across the globe. STROBE has partnered with them to develop a project management introduction specifically for an academic research context.

For Kids

WOW Museum

STROBE sponsors the WOW Children’s Museum Girls in Science Night and provides hands on experiments to girls ages 3-8 run by women of STROBE to demonstrate to girls that they can be a scientist.

Science Discovery

CU Science Discovery provides experiential summer camps, after school, homeschool, and classroom STEM learning experiences for K-12 schools across Colorado and is part of the Port to the Public Network. STROBE also partners with CU Science Discovery to develop and run the STROBE Four Corners Outreach Workshop.
